Having just migrated from Palm 4 to Address Book, I haven't been able to figure out how to add extra field names (such as Company name) to the column view. It was great to be able to order the list by Company to find the one I want. I've looked high and low, and as yet haven't found the secret to adding fields.

Anyone know how it's done...or-- perish the thought-- IF it can be?

Left click on one of the fields that are already there, then select custom and it will bring up a box, name it whatever you want and hit Ok. If you want to add this to a existing entry make sure that you hit edit in the bottom of the address book

Sorry-- maybe I didn't explain my question well enough. The problem isnt' that I want to give existing fields new names. What I want to do is be able to list more than one field (such as "Name" or "Company") in the main Address Book window (the one that pops up when you run Address Book).

Right now there are three columns:

Group -- Name -- and then the Card view.

I'd like to add another column, say "Company", so that I can click on the column name and have the entries in the group sorted by company.

So next to "Name" would be another column, "Company" and maybe another one "Phone Number", and I could sort on any of those column headings.

It's like how in iTunes you can order a group by Song name, Artist name, running time, etc.

It's something that Palm Desktop can do (it's the default view for Palm) and maybe Address Book just can't do it. But I was hoping it could...

Thanks again,
W

the simple answer is that you cant.

but searching is so fast that you can effectively limit it to certain companies by typing the company name, and/or put contacts in one company into a group list.

Address Book is not a complete PIM solution yet, if you need Palm Desktop, stick with Palm Desktop.

Although someone could write a custom Address Book app that does support adding custom tags. The Address Book database allows you to associate any kind of data with any entry.

This is why I still keep Now Contact around. You can assign categories and sort by them, too. Useful for things like Vendors, Clients and Employees for me. You can kinda do this in Address Book by making groups, but it's not the same as having sorting options. It's also nice to have all the contact info displayed on one line across the screen. With adress book, all your contact info re-arranges itself in the right pane, depending on how much data you have an a contact, which it makes it harder to spot the pertinent info.

I think a more iTunes-like interface would be fab.
