Several weeks ago I was using 10.2.2 and in the process of finishing up a project. When the project ended I decided to finally do an update of my system. I tried installing Apple's 10.2.8 update....it KILLED my computer. The machine would start up and then freeze while drawing things on the screen. I pulled out my system CDs to try and do some repairs...no luck. I switched back to 9.2 and tried to coerce the files to let me do a totally clean install. I re-installed Jaguar...still pretty dead.

Apple was no help (I hate to mention a bad mark of such a great company). My 3 yr Apple coverage just gave me the run-around. I finally decided to get 10.3 and try the new system. it worked! I'm thrilled, but I feel like I've been forced into upgrading.

Normally I'd assume that I did something wrong with my system, but having a number of years of work experience under my belt (including a Soft. Eng. at Apple), and an MS in CS, I feel confident in saying that the Apple 10.2.8 update did my machine no good.

Well, I hope no one else had this problem.

Yeah, sucks to be forced into something superior. Sort like being forced to work for more pay.

Give the guy a break. Maybe he got ahold of the bad 10.2.8 update that Apple pulled after 2 days? Are we having collective amnesia here?

Sometimes installs do go south. Backup, backup, backup. I suggest a Firewire drive, and a complete mirror, so that if you do have to wipe a drive clean, you can do so with no worries.

Sure you want to recommend a Firewire drive?

Maybe not an 800...

No probs here with Maxtor 40 GB W/Oxford 911 chipset. The reports of FW 400 failures are isolated to a very few people.

But yeah, if you've got a Powemac, just slap another internal drive in there. Faster than Firewire, anyway.
