I have about 20gb of mp3 in my home directory. I think its kind of pointless to encrypt those. Is there a way to have filevault exclude those directories where the mp3s are?

I guess I'm worried about slowing down my system with the encryption on the mp3s.

What are you guys doing about that?

The consensus seems to be moving the music collection from your home folder to different location such as shared folder. Whatever you have in your home folder, Filevault will encrypt.
