how do you kill the startup bong when you boot your mac? I can't find it anywhere in the system prefs.

Turn the volume all the way down before you shut down.

You asked. That is the answer. That's been traditionally the only way to do it for years.

Want another one? Write a shell script to shut the volume off. Attach that to a logout hook. Write a second shell script to set the volume to whatever level you want. Attach that to a login hook. End of start up chime.

Or, plug in a set of headphones.

There are two solutions.

The easiest, and the one I use myself, is to hold down the mute key while starting up... this will only mute the startup sound, but will leave the normal system volume untouched.

The more involved method is to use this script.

It's actually not the "startup sound" either: its official name is the startup chime.

P.S. Do a search, this was covered extensively about a week ago.

Install bad RAM , I kinda shocked some new ram i bought when i drop on the floor of my carpet.

Once i put it it, the startup chime kinda went away. I thought all the sound in my comp was lost, but nope, just the startup chime.

After a week of kernal panics, i've removed the bad ram, and the chime came back.

I SAY IF YOU WANT TO GET RID OF THE CHIME, use bad ram!!!

Bad Ram! BAD RAM DAM YOU!!!

I was looking through the developer tools, and found something that might work:
take a look at
/Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/HAL/HALLab

there is a slider to change the boot chime, however it was grayed out on my 12" powerbook, so your results may vary.
