I think I've been using Panther and realized that I'm missing a small feature.

From what I read of various articles when you launch an app from the finder, it's icon is supposed to "shoot" out atthe user in a neat transparent way. I don't any of this on my machine. Is this a Quartz Extreme exclusive like the fast user rotating cube? From the Ars Technica review, the guy was able to get it using a B/W G3/400. I've got a sawtooth 450 and I have no neat transparent effect. Is there an option I have to click?

Bah, I feel like I'm missing out.

Interesting.. How did you install your panther?? You bought a Panther Box from store and installed in? Fill in details how you got Panther. Yeah, it's like "ghostly' when you double click an icon.. Weird.. its supposed to work....

Paste the following into the Terminal and press the return key, then relaunch the Finder:

defaults remove com.apple.finder ZoomRects
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

I bought it from Apple store online. Did an archive install. That's it. Everything went smoothly.

Also to Developer, the terminal command didn't fix it. But thanks anyways.

yeah, mine does the nifty transparent zoom thing. I did an upgrade install (with a carefully cloned copy of my entire disk set aside in case of trouble). I do NOT have a QE enabled machine and it works fine for me

I suggest downloading Cocktail and use the Interface section. First, you may want to click on the Defaults button, then click Restart. The Finder will be restarted.
Then ensure the "Disable rectangle effect when opening files" is unchecked. You must click the Restart button after making any changes.
I think that after you use the terminal command developer pointed out you must restart the Finder or logout.
The effect will only occur when launching from an icon in the Finder.

pssst! Try a more descriptive topic title next time.

And you "think you've been using Panther"? You're not sure?

If its not working on a 450 G4, then I "think he may not be using Panther"

Hey Aiglos ... press the F11 key. If everything on your screen hides and the desktop is revealed, you're using Panther

Actually, the command line trick on the terminal worked. For some reason it just work after a reboot.

Thanks to Developer for that.

Yah, sorry about the title, I was in a rush and I couldn't think of anything at the time.

ANd I'm pretty sure I've got Pnather as the box is sitting right next to me, and my credit card bill reminds me...
