is there away to map a middle mouse action to "copy / paste"?

I really find it useful the way the linux / sgi systems do this. particularly for working in the terminal. after using a sgi / linux machine having to manually 'copy / pastse' with keyboard actins gets really cumbersome.

...but what's keeping me from being really thrilled is that this ONLY works within the terminal. There's no reason that this shouldn't happen accross all apps... when I have ANY text selected in any window I should be able to middle mouse paste it anywhere.

perhaps this is an option that be activated somewhere...

This may not be quite what you had in mind, but I find it to be very useful for many similar purposes:

CocoaGestures

I set my mouse's scroll-wheel-button to activate the mouse gestures, and you can specify gestures for any menu command. (And, of course, it comes with many default gestures for common commands.) While I use the right button's contextual menu for copying and pasting, I do use mouse gestures for delete/clear and for 'select all'. And the gesture-recognizer seems to be quite flexible.
