There has been some good advice on the forum as to the best way to save Mail on a clean install of Panther.
I'm wondering how to do the same with Address Book contacts. Thanks

Backup, or iSync.
If you don't have .mac, I THINK you could back up the Address Book folder in the Application Support directory. Someone please confirm this.

Highlight all and drag to your desktop and then mail the resulting vCard to yourself.

I looked in the Application Support and there doesn't seem to be anything there for address book. I did a search, and the only other place where the files might be kept is at
user/ library / addresses
Is this the folder I have to copy to keep all of my addresses info?

From Apple:
To save a copy of your address book for safekeeping, copy the Address Book file to another location (such as an external hard disk or a CD). The Address Book file is located in your Home directory's Library folder, inside the Application Support folder (~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook).
