I have been searching this forum, I have been searching Apple's forums, and until now I cannot find a solution for the problem of not getting a single fax out the door.

Is there anyone who has a solution for it?

Seems that plenty others have the same problem: "software error...".

Thanks.

Fax? You mean you want to fax to someone from your mac?? I did use the Microsoft Word on 10.3 and when you click "PRINT" and then you should see fax on the bottom of box when it asks you if youre ready to fax it.
Hope it helps.

I've send several faxes from different apps without any problems. Unfortunately you cannot fax via airport: you have to plug in a landline.

OK, instead of answers like "I've seen a fax in my life" or "My uncle has a faxmachine"....

Apple has made faxing a new feature in Panther. As Steve said: "who wants to fax these days???" I rarely use it, but some companies still rely on faxes, so I want it to work.
Go to the list of new features in Panther and read:
---------------------------------------
Fax Receive via Folder, Email or Printer
Receive a fax from the built-in fax modem as a file, in email or printed to any printer.

Fax Sending From any Application
Print any Mac OS X document as a fax through built-in internal modem.

Fax Cover Page
Create customized cover page for sending faxes.
---------------------------------------

Under System Preferences there now is a "Print & Fax" item, where you can state to make your Mac receive faxes, after x-number of rings, where to put your incoming faxes, etc.

To send a fax from any application which provides a Print dialogue, you can simply choose Print and you'll find a Fax button, which can be pressed. Assuming you have an analogue modem (your internal Mac should do, providing it's not connected to an ISP) you can then simply fill in a fax number and send it.

This is described in the Mac OS X Help.

The problem is that it doesn't work for most users. I have been able to receive some faxes from a friend, with whom I tested this new feature, but I was never able to send one.

Look into htis Apple Discussions Forum or do a search in this forum on "fax", and you'll find out it is a serious problem.
As it is a feature, Apple needs to support it.
Now, it doesn't work.

Repair permissions and running Diskwarrior doesn't fix it, btw.

From Macfixit report:

Mac OS X 10.3: Fixing fax problems

Rob Yager offers a series of workarounds for those having problems with Mac OS X 10.3's ability to forward the faxes it receives by email to addresses you specify. The service makes use of postfix - an mail sending application built into Mac OS X, and in some cases, some items are not installed correctly.

1. The service makes use of some special users that need to be configured. In many installations, the script to do that isn't run. A way to fix that is to type the following in Terminal: sudo /Library/Receipts/Essentials.pkg/Contents/Resources/CreateSystemUsers

The only space is between sudo and /Library. You'll need to enter your administrator password

2. After you have done this, it is probably an idea to repair permissions using DiskUtility

3. Edit /usr/libexec/fax/faxnotify using your favorite UNIX editor to replace the line that reads

stdout, stdin = os.popen2('/usr/bin/mail ' + quote(recipients) with stdout, stdin = os.popen2('/usr/sbin/sendmail -oi -t')

This removes some unwanted space between the last of the headers and the MIME boundary line in the message. If you don't do this, the received message will not recognize the attachment it contains which is the fax.

4. You may need to edit /etc/hostconfig If there is a line which says

MAILSERVER=-NO- change it to MAILSERVER=-AUTOMATIC-

This will allow postfix to start when your computer has processed the fax and delivers it to postfix to forward on.

5. Restart and test

HP statement on all-in-one support We previously noted lack of full functionality with Hewlett Packard's all-in-one print/scan/fax devices under Mac OS X 10.3. The company has now made an official statement on the issue:

"Many current HP products have 'Print Only" drivers built into the new OS 10.3 (see table). To maintain full functionality of your HP All-in-One products, please wait for the 10.3 HP software driver that will be available with the next few weeks. "

This solves the problem with sending email after receiving a fax.

Not solving the problem of sending a fax.

What are your steps? What kind of problem are you seeing? No doc received at end? Doc is in holding? Modem not connecting? What? You don't give a lot of information about your problem. Are you typing in the phone number or using the address book?

Wasn't there a thread somewhere about the telephone number to send the fax to was either adding or dropping a digit? Sorry I cannot be more specific, but all I can remember is seeing some mention of it.

I could not find a reference to digit-dropping, but there is a long thread on Apple (55 posts) here:

Apple Print and Fax Forum Thread Link

It seems to indicate that a necessary installer script is not always run when installing Panther and that certain folders MUST be in their installed places. Two things to look at I guess.

If you look at my posts you'll find out that I did mention this forum, I even linked it: there's no solution whatsoever.

What are my steps?
Click Print, click Fax, send a fax. It's that simple.

There is nothing with docs, as a Doc suppose to be a M$ Word document. This new fax-stuff is all about faxing instead of printing in whatever program which supports printing, i.e. QuickTime, Mail, Safari, whatever.

My probkem is that there is no fax getting out, as described in my former posts.

I'm typing in the phone number, without the special characters Address Book is giving.
Either way, input from Address Book isn't working as well.

Is there a way to test your modem to make sure it is working? Hardware test of some kind? Just so you are sure it solely a software problem?

Yes, I've received faxes now and then (not all get received).
I've testted the modem by connecting to an ISP which works -> cable (= line) OK and modem OK.

I'm going to sleep. Just read the Apple Forum Link: many people do have problems with this, and until now it hasn't been solved.
MaxFixit had a story about M$ Word fax-problems, but it isn't related to M$, it's related to bad implementation of this, quite old, technology.

One thing you should check out is this:

http://www.rwts.com.au/FaxEmailHelper/

This was written by the same programmer who wrote the fax program Apple is using in 10.3. I realize that not all of the helper will be relevant, but the first part, fixing the configuration, might be.
