Since upgrading to Panther, every so often (once a week or so), my laptop heats up, and the fan comes on, when I'm doing almost nothing. Very few apps open. I check the Activity Monitor, and something called '(null)' is using most of my CPU (greater than 80%).

I've quit every app but, Finder and Activity Monitor, and still '(null)' is eating up my processor cycles. The only way I can get rid of this is to log out and back in. Anyone know what is causing this?

(I wanted to upload a screenshot, but it wasn't clear here how to do that.)

Eurkea, I think I found the answer! I did some googling and came up empty, so I decided to look at Activity Monitor's Inspector for Null. I selected the Open Files display and scrolled down until I found an entry for the one program that I usually run in Classic. Then I shut Classic down, went back to the Activity Monitor and found Null was terminated. So I think it's safe to assume this is a process associated with Classic.

Yeah, I had force quit (null); then later I had to start up Classic and just happened to pop open Activity Viewer while I was waiting, and there it was. Stupid Classic.
