In OS9 I used to just drop a .snd file into the Startup Items folder and it would play at startup. Is there a way of doing this in X? Any help appreciated.

You could probably do this. It wouldn't be as easy as dropping the sound in a folder, but you could create a startupItem that played a sound. Look on macosxhints for how to do it.
