For some inexplicable reason, my G4 iMac stopped connecting the internet (via DSL). It may have happened after installed all the latest updates (currently running 10.2.8 ). Every time I launch Safari, or any other browser, I immediately get a "Sever Not Found" error.
Any advice?

did you check your network preferences and make sure they are still correct? Update could have changed them

I don't remember what my Network preferences were set at, but it was automatic. You could just plug the CAT5 cable into the iMac's Ethernet port, and it instantly connected to my DSL provider. Now the connection is as dead as a door nail, but there is nothing wrong with my hardware. It seems to be software issue.

Well, you must have had some sort of network pref. Are you posting right now from a mac or a PC ? If you're posting from a mac ... make sure the G4 iMacs network prefs are identical to the machine you are using.
As an example. I use DSL and had to put my ISP's domain and password to connect. Having it set on "Automatic" does not work.

I'm posting this from my PC. Hmm...mine is set at Automatic. Let me see if that's the problem.

Ahhh ... how does your PC and Mac share the DSL connection ? Are you using a router or "internet sharing" of some sort ? If you are using a hardware router, the "Automatic" may in fact work on the Mac ... as long as its set to use ethernet .... default would be internal modem, I believe.

Yes, my PC and Mac share a router connection via my LinkSys.

you'll need to provide more info about your setup:
Where is the cat5 cable coming from ? (a router ?, from the PC ? from a networking hub ?)
What does your networking prefs say you are using to connect (ethernet ? modem ?)
If it says you are connecting via ethernet, how does it say you are connecting (PPPoE, DHCP) ? If it says "internal modem", you'll have to change it the ethernet.
Chances are you have one little setting that is messed up (or changed) since the update.

Well that's odd. I just switched ports where my iMac was plugged into, on my router, and now everything is working again? Wonder if I have a dead port?

Yep, as soon as I went back to the previous port, I lost the connection. Looks like I have a dead spot.
