Annoying system performance issue

I installed Panther weeks ago (upgrade, not a clean install). Performance was fine.
Starting just two days ago, my system (a Titanium PB 667) would become less responsive every 5-6 seconds. A quick check of Activity Monitor reveals that kernel_task, PID 0 is sucking up anywhere from 30-50% of the CPU cycles at just those times, every 5-6 seconds.
Symptoms include general lack of responsiveness for just a second (including being able to type ahead of the computer), and cursor non-responsiveness.
I have repaired permissions (*the* Apple voodoo of the new millenium ). What else should I be looking for?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Mark

Well, whatever it was, after a day and a half, it spontaneously remedied itself.
Cheers,

I'm suddenly having the same problem with my 1.25 AlBook, except every 5 or 6 seconds kernel_task eats up more like 90% of my processor. I haven't changed any hardware or software recently. Is there some way to tame this thing without just waiting to see if it stops?
This is starting to remind me of Windows! lol...
Thanks,

Yes and it didn't help I was able to nail down the source, however:
I have 7 different USB devices attached to my Powerbook so I tried plugging them in one at a time. Turns out the task only peaks like that when my Griffin iMic is plugged in and LineIn is running.
Does anyone know how I can get a signal from my XM radio through to my Creature speakers via my iMic? I thought I could just use the "Thru" checkbox in Audio MIDI setup but it's grayed out when when the iMic is selected. Is there some way I can edit that preference directly without going through the interface?
Is there some way to make LineIn behave with my iMic and Panther? It never did this before!
Thanks for your help!
