I have a dual G5/2.5GB RAM running 10.3.1 and occasionally netstat goes berserk. According to top in the terminal It starts to hit 100% of one of my G5's and will go on indefinitely if I don't kill it. I can kill it but it comes back within a few days or so. I had the problem under 10.2.7+8 as well and it is more of a nuisance than anything but I can tell when it starts when the fans start to spool up. In the activity monitor it says the parent process is sh.

The only thing I can think of is that I use X Resource Graph and that may be causing trouble. I'm not a UNIX guru and was wondering what are the possible causes and fixes. Thanks in advance.

Easy... don't run X Resource Graph!

But to be a bit more particular... what are the options that netstat is running with? If you can do a 'ps -aex' and find out what options netstat is using it will help in figureing out what is going on.

I killed it before I got a chance to read this but next time it acts up I will do what you say to get more info. Thanks.

Hello,

I'm the developer of X Resource Graph. XRG gets it's network statistics by using BSD system calls, not by running netstat. I haven't heard of anyone else having problems. If you do find that XRG is the cause of your problem though, let me know, and I will take a look at the code and try to fix it.

Good luck finding out what is causing your netstat issue. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
