i'm having a heluva time trying to open real media streams. went to c-span.org in safari and tried to access the media links which are javascript links which then spawns the player. instead of opening through realone player, it tries to open through quicktime and i have no idea how to change this. is this a mime type issue or something?

This is an odd one since it worked fine on my machine but not on my boss' machine. Here's what I did on my boss' machine to get it to work.
Launch RealOne Player and go into Preferences. Under "Media Types" check the box for Real-Time Streaming Protocol.
This unfortunately will probably also break Quicktime using rtsp.

Safari sometimes isn't good about handing off media clips properly. Usually, any problem can be fixed either by choosing Check Media Types from RealOne Player's Help menu, or by resetting RealOne Player (by holding down control and shift when launching the player.) Those steps make the player re-save its media type entries in the Mac's InternetConfig database. It may also be useful to do a Finder "Get Info" on a downloaded .rm file and tell the Finder to always open that type of file with RealOne Player.
There typically isn't a conflict between RealOne rtsp streams and QuickTime rtsp streams since QuickTime rtsp usually are not referred to with URLs like "rtsp://..." as RealOne streams are. That media type setting in RealOne Player just is a signal to tell InternetConfig that URLs beginning with rtsp: are for RealOne Player; QuickTime's rtsp streams are generally initiated by downloading a file via http.

I dug this old thread up because I have a similar problem.
Where the heck do I change mime settings for Safari plug-ins?
In OS 9, a control panel did the job. In X, the only option is for Quicktime mime settings. I want all mime settings for all applications in a configurable list. This is really starting to piss me off GD it.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

This program is

not a Pref Pane and
doesn't allow the selection of a plug-in from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins.
Is there anything that meets these requirements, especially the second?
