Please help......

I have a Mac G4/PCI graphics/400MHz/384 MB Apple Studio 17 display running from VGA port (so no adapter required), ATI RAGE 128 graphics card.

The install "says" its successful but on reboot I get to either a gray screen with a really ugly white, fractured-looking stripe or, have once or twice gotten to a blue screen where it just hung.

Message I get using "Command S":

verifyCompatibility(): Extension "com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily" cannot be found.
get DependencyListforKmod(): Dependency com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily of com.apple.driver.AppleGossamerPE is not compatible or is unavailable.

At the bottom of the screen it says panic: we are hanging here

History:
Have been running 9.2.2 and wanted to install OS X. I have CDs for 10.2.4 and intended to update to at least 10.2.8. I should mention that my CD's originally shipped with an iBook (I bought them from a liquidation sale, I don't own an iBook) but I thought the installation CD's were generic.

I have installed 10.2.4 about 6 times now in various ways: clean install, archive and install, update. Updated the ATI graphics driver for the RAGE 128 card (the one that came with the Mac), no firmware updates needed for the PCI G4. I have used disk utility, repaired permissions, and tried Micromat Tech and found no problems with RAM, the HD or file structure.

If I boot in OS 9 I can see the OS X system files and there is a AppleGossamerPE folder in the Extensions.

What should I do next? Is this a PCI graphics card problem?

I think Panther has big problems with the ATI Rage card. Do a search in this forum and you will find hundreds of posts on it. In short, most people have not been able to get Panther working with the ATI Rage.

Thanks, I did do a search before posting. I am not even up to Panther yet. I am trying to get it to work with Jaguar. Same problem?

No Jaguar did not seem to have problems with the ATI Rage. The big hullabaloo was when people upgraded to Panther and found it would no longer work.

Neither Jaguar nor Panther have problems with my Rev B blue and white G3, which (other than the processor) is essentially identical to a PCI graphics G4.

Gossamer is the code name for the beige G3, clearly not applicable to your machine.

What exactly do the installer CDs say on them? Do they say anything about being Restore CDs, or do they say anything at all about the iBook? If the CDs are just normal OS X CDs with the X logo, then you shouldn't have any problem using them to install Jaguar.

The installer CDs say Mac OS X, Install Disc 1 and Mac OS X, Install Disc 2. Definitely not restore CDs. The Mac OS version on the CDs is 10.2.4

Far as I can tell, the CD's themselves aren't the problem because the freeze situation arises when OS X is booting and loading extensions, and since the Unix error message specifically mentions PCI...... I was thinking that was my most likely problem.

Anything else I should try? I don't have any experience with Unix but I'm willing to jump in if it will get my system operational with OS X.

Thanks!!
