Infrared gone under Panther?

As I have an old Bondi Blu iMac with infrared, I wondered how the connection would be like under Panther, and more, how the Network panel would look like.
I found out Panther doesn't see my infrared port.
Anyone has an idea why not?
Is it not supported anymore? After all they do not ship Macs with IR I believe.

Does your computer show an IrDA configuration under "Internet Connect"??

No, that's what I think is so strange.
It used to work before, it still does in OS 9 of course.
