Has anyone seen what the "November 2003 RADEON update for Mac OS 10.2.8" update actually does?

With my Radeon 8500 on OS X before there were no drivers you could download from ATI. They just said to use OS X's built-in drivers.

Well, I noticed when I booted into OS 9 I have an ATI menu bar and other options that I didn't have with OS X's built-in driver.

Has this November update for 10.2.8 made any of these options available? If so, which ones? ATI's release notes make no mention of this and my email to ATI got nothing but an auto response with links to the same (lacking) info.

From what I gather, there may be a new ATI pref pane for the 10.2.8 version. If so, what's in it? Are there any other options or an ATI menubar item?

This is so lame, why can't ATI just post this kind of info! Grrr..... I'm not going to install this thing unless some compelling info/reasons to do so come about.

I see some info for the 10.3 update, but next to nothing on what the 10.2.8 update has to offer. Please help.

I feel so cold and all alone... has anyone else wondered this or used this thing and checked?

I think you are right, a new preference pane for the card. One user has posted deep trouble with it. You can find a lot of info here on their boards:

Thank you for the info, mcsjgs! I looked there, but not much mention of what's new there and they are having email trouble so you can't register right now. : (

The original release for the recent ATI drivers deleted the custom prefanes. They updated the installers so they don't do that. I don't know of any other issues in regards to Jaguar.

*sigh*

Yes, but was anything updated? Here's my issue. There is no real "read me" file or "what's new" from ATI or anywhere else I've been checking (including the other forum suggested here). I've read the "Release Notes" from ATI and there is simply no mention whatsoever of what's new for the Jaguar 10.2.8 driver... nada... I've emailed ATI and they've sent back links to nothingness.

If anyone is using this 10.2.8 driver and can please confirm wheter there are any new prefs/functions etc., PLEASE post.

As of now, I have an ATI Radeon 8500 with the built-in OS X drivers and I have no options with this card. When I boot into OS 9 and its available ATI driver, there are various options made available.

So... In a nutshell, I'm hoping that since there is now finally an ATI released driver for 10.2.8 it may offer something new (options in 10.2.8) so that it may be worth the risk of upgrading.

This is insane that it's so much trouble to find out something so goddam simple. Grrrrr... ATI really needs to get on the ----ing ball and simply note "what's new".

In case that never happens... I'm hoping someone out there can fill me in...

Sigh.... Thanks for you help, though.

why don't you just install the update?

people were talking about the update erasing PrefPanes in Panther. i backed that up, and then installed it, only to find nothing went wrong, and now i have Mac2TV options again...woo-hoo!

oh, and if you checked out xlr8yourmac.com's reports on this, you'll see that the bad installer (the one that erased preference panes) has been corrected, and the latest posted installers don't have this error.

All the time I would spend using CCC on 10.2.8 backing up and installing only to find trouble and no new options? No thanks.

BTW, are you talking about the update for Jaguar or Panther? I'm talking about Jaguar 10.2.8 here.

Thanks for the input, though.

Anyone install for Jaguar and see new options?

I called ATI and reviewed the release notes with them, they agreed that the notes for 10.2.8 are too vague and will update.

I'm skeptical they'll do it... we'll see. Fer crap's sake, I just want to know if any new options will be made available for my Radeon 8500 for Mac with this Nov. release before I bother with this apparent "update".

I've heard this is causing people trouble and no one wants to share what's new... including ATI. I give up.
