I've just tried to fax a Word document: everything seemed to go smoothly, but after dialing and communicating with the remote machine, I have no idea whether the fax went through or not. The window closed down, but there is no trace of sent faxes... is there a log? Are the sent faxes automatically saved somewhere? I'm confused...

If you open Console.app (/Applications/Utilities), in the left pane, you see /var/logs. Expand it and you see "fax." Expand that and see if it shows anything there. I have never faxed anything so I have no log files in that. Report back and let me know how it goes. I'm just throwing out a guess here.

Good call on the fax log in Console app. I sent my first faxes yesterday, but they don't show up in the fax log. It's still empty.

You can connect directly to the CUPS server though by typing 127.0.0.1:631 in your browser address bar. Then select "Manage Printers" then click on "Internal_Modem" then click on "Show Completed Jobs." Although it doesn't actually show confirmations, at least the driver thinks the fax jobs are complete.

Built-in faxing is great, but Apple still has some room for improvement. www.apple.com/macosx/feedback

If you click on "Show Completed Jobs" it should display what you have faxed and when, along with information if the job was cancelled or completed. Not ideal, but at least you can confirm if the fax was sent.

Ditch Apple's half-baked implementation (which is fine for receiving but not sending faxes) and get Simle On Your Mac's excellent PageSender instead.

I am not sure, but this could have changed since it was posted a year ago. That could be why it didn't show up for him but does show up for you. We are 6 revisions into Panther, after all.
