As the subject, really. I've just installed Panther (upgrade install), and my menu extras keep vanishing then reloading once every 5 seconds. Literally as soon as they have all loaded they quit again. Sometimes, if I'm quick, I can select and use one, but if I drag one off the menubar (or turn it off in system prefs) it'll return with the next reload.

Any ideas on what to do?

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

What non-Apple menu extras are you using?

None.

The only non-default one is the one from Apple Remote Desktop. The others are IrDA, Modem, Airport, Monitors, Sound, Keyboard, Battery, Clock.

Interesting, it sure sounds like your "SystemUIServer" is hosed...normally a force quit of that (using Acitivity Monitor) will work; however, if you keep seeing the problem after restarts/logins, it's deeper then that.

Can you try an archive/install from a backup of 10.2.8?

Since you did an upgrade install, there is most likely something still hanging around.
Try a new user account, and if it works good there, start looking in ~/Library/Preferences and then in ~/Library/Application Support or Application Enhancers

I'd rather not reinstall if I can get away with it - I'll leave it as a last resort. The computer in question is not my main work machine - it's a Pismo that I was just using to test Panther and see if it caused any problems, before I installed it on my Albook. So it's not vital to have a working system, but I want to know what the problem is before I install on my main computer.

I'm in the process of updating to 10.3.1 now - I'll let you know if that fixes anything.

Nope, it didn't help.

Know of any way I can reinstall that system UI think without reinstalling the whole OS?

Try deleting your com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file and see if that helps before re-installing...

Wow, that seemed to fix it!

I deleted com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

Now most of my menu extras have vanished from the menubar - I'll let you know if bringing any back causes problems...
