Shouldn't this be simple?

I had posted the following in the Networking forum, and no one gave a sufficient reply, so hopefully the Mac OS X forum will prove to be more useful.
I am the only member in my fraternity with a Mac, so no one else was able to help me with the following...
When I go to Go-->Connect to Server..., I see the computers that are connected to our local network and am able to download their files. I am trying to figure out how to add my own computer to that list. I have tried going to System Prefs-->Sharing-->Start Personal/Window File Sharing, but still no one else can see my computer. So...how do I do ALL of the following:
1) Allow my computer to share selected files on the local network.
2) Only allow others to download the files, not edit them.
3) Choose a network name for my computer.
4) Is the Public folder in the Home directory the correct and only place to put these files I would like to share? In other words, I do not want other users to access all files on my computer.
5) Password-protect some of the stuff.
I have never tried this before, so forgive me if some of these questions do not make sense and if some of the answers are obvious.
Thanks a lot.

Yeah you're right it should be easy. Just a couple of questions. Are you using Jaguar or Panther. Panther reportedly has better built in Windows sharing, although I personally have not seen it. If you are using Jaguar or can't get the Panther Windows sharing the answer is Thursby's Dave. Works great, walks you through the set-up and is not too expensive. Give it a try. Should work. Hope this helps

Hi. I am running Jaguar 10.2.8. Do I need something like Thursby's Dave to do all of things I listed? Or can I do it without additional software? Thanks.

You don't need Dave. Go to System Prefs. Click on My Account or Accounts... I can't remember now. There's an option to Allow Windows Users to Connect, or something like that. Check that.
Only your Public folder will be available (unless you use something like SharePoints) and you set your name in Sharing pref pane. Get connected first, then post back to figure out the other stuff.

Yes. You need to allow windows users to log in via the "my accounts" prefpane.
Then you'll need sharepoints, which will make everything easier. You can set up your MP3 or porn drive ( ) to be shared and allow anyone to log into JUST that part of your machine. It's very handy if, like me, you have a couple of drives devoted to media and want to allow people to access them.
Cheers

If you are using Jaguar, the only way that your PC's will see the Mac is by clicking on 'run', and typing:
\\your-ip-address\your-user-name
(as far as I know, in order to get round having to do this, you will need something similar to Dave...)
HOWEVER, if you are running Panther, you can dynamically browse your Mac in the same way that you would browse any PC in your network, from your PC.

Personally I've been using Dave at work where I have the only Mac in a large healthcare organization. It works great and is simple to set up. It allows me to share printers with the windows network and browse the network. Worked great in Jaguar. In Panther, I've had more difficulty. Panther's networking seems to be a bit flakey. Volumes appear and disappear at will, even while I'm browsing them, but back to the topic at hand. Unless you want to work with command line, Dave is easy.

How do you setup the sharepoints?
As a test I was using my friends XP machine and we were just setting up a wireless connection on a network I "created"
Gave him a login and all he could see was his profile files....And in them was on file that said localized and it was 0kb.....
Any ideas?

First you have to allow filesharing via smb (how to do this is already covered in this thread - in panther it is much easier).
I would recommend to create a special smb filesharing User.
Next you should set up the SMB Workgroup for your Mac. This can be done in the app Directory Access in the folder Utilities in the Applications folder.
Just got to smb and click configure and then enter the name of the workgroup all other PCs use.
On a side note - is your Mac in the same subnet as the other computers? If not, this would prevent the other computers to detect your mac.
All computers should have an IP Address in the same range (like 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.4 - only different in the last number).

I've seen where Window won't list computers in a different workgroup or domain.
If you open /Applications/Utilities/Directory Access you can change your default workgroup to match the Windows boxes.
