My setup:

PowerMac G4, with Panther 10.3.1 attached to a Epson 740, wired to a NetGear Wireless router (802.11b).
An iBook has Jaguar 10.2.6.

Now, somehow, every time I turn the printer on, a new epson 740 is added to my list of printers in Printer Setup.
Then the iBook's default printer is changed to the G4's internal modem (WTF ?).
So basically every time I turn the printer on, the iBook can't print until I change the default printer back to one of the many 740's on the list.

Now this is extremely annoying by itself, but the fact that the owner of the iBook, happens to be my mother makes it even more annoying since she doesn't understand how to configure the printer (and obviously this shouldn't happen in the first place)

please help, anyone ?

My guess is that this is a Panther bug. Try to disable rendez-vous with Directory Access application in /Application/Utilities (not sure if you need to do it on both Mac, the iBook may be enough), it may help until Apple fix the issue. Btw, you should open a bug report here.

sent the bug report to apple, still haven't found a solution, anyone else experiencing this ... at all ?

what's the internal modem doing among the shared printers anyway ? does this have something to do with panther's faxing ability's ?

Could be as the fax is set up as printer. The fax implementation is fairly crude according to other posters and based on an older program by a fellow now in Austrailia. Do a search for fax on this board and follow the main threads. Lot of problems.

There was also a recent thread about that model of Epson printer you might want to check. Same thing, search for Epson 740
