I'm running a 2 USB iBook 600 mhz from circa 2001. I used Jaguar with no problems, but after updating to Panther, I've had a big one - frequently, my machine just goes black. Well, almost black - set your brightness to the lowest level - it's like that. The computer works perfectly; runs applications, boots up fine, etc., except for the screen being very dark. This happens every time I wake up from sleep, sometimes when I'm in the middle of doing something on the computer, sometimes just out of the blue when it's on screensaver or just sitting there, and sometimes after I shut down. If I'm lucky, restarting a few times fixes it, or, if I just leave it on and alone for a long time, the brightness randomly comes back on. Sometimes, though, none of this works, and I have to reinstall Panther. I updated to 10.3.1 recently in hopes that the problem would be solved, but nope - I just had to go through another long session of trying to get my brightness back. I tried to reinstall Panther; I set it to archive and install but I got an error as it prepared the disk each time I tried. Jaguar won't even recognize my hard drive when it asks for a location to install. Luckily, the color popped back on as I was backing up some files onto a desktop, getting ready to try a clean install. Still, this is really frustrating, and I don't want to have to work with a darkened machine every time this happens (the fact that I can't reinstall either 10.3 or 10.2 is disheartening). If anyone has any ideas for troubleshooting or solutions, or if you've had the same problem I would really appreciate some responses. Thanks!

Panther seems to have display problems on a lot of portables. There is a fix that involves deleteing vendor id files. Check this thread at Apple:

Hopefully this will be rectified in 10.3.2
