I'm posting for a pal who has a dual g4 450 with panther installed that:

•_gets stuck on the grey apple screen
•_won't boot off a CD
•_won't boot into single user mode.

Obviously, something's really wrong, but we're not sure what. Any ideas on where to start?

Thanks,

Tom

will it even give you a startup chime?

whip out the manual or get it online--sometimes the reset button can help if properly employed with that and perhaps a key combo (it'd be in the manual or emergency help booklet. My old wallstreet pb was revived once like this).

I'm assuming that it's mostly a stock config on the G4?

Any add-on PCI cards, non-OEM graphics cards? Connected peripherals? If there are, disconnect them and try booting again.

A good place to start is by zapping the PRAM. CMD-OPT-P-R on boot.

If that doesn't work, try booting into OpenFirmware (CMD-OPT-O-F) and running 'reset-nvram' and 'reset-all'.

those are generally good places to start for trouble shooting.

Might try unplugging it for a few minutes then the above hints and tips. Check the power cord connections both ends and make sure plug is working (sounds obvious, sometimes isn't with a bad power cord for instance).
