In practice, some commands are executed much slower under Panther than with the previous version of OSX. Such as MovieTask with Panther is executed in 1.266ms vs. 0.629ms with 10.2.6. When you add several thousands of those computation loops, it has a profound impact on the performances.

Further investigation by the performance team has revealed that this is a bug introduced into 10.2.8 (Smeagol) and beyond. This update was to accommodate the G5s. The error is an adjustment to the Branch Target Instruction Cache (BTIC), where it is unintentionally being turned off.

The bug is being tracked as rdar://3491988. I don't know what the timeline is for fixing it, but I'd imagine that it will be getting high priority attention.

This bug seems to be the consequence of adapting MacOSX for the G5

What's the point?

An error is causing Panther not to perform up-to-par under certain circumstances compared to Jaguar? No shocker....that's why they call them "bugs"...

It just goes to show you that Panther isn't magic, like some people claim it is.

Some things seem faster, but a lot of it is because the pacing has changed to make it SEEM faster.

I applaud Panther's improvements, (incl. real speed changes in some areas) but like I said, it ain't magic. Well, Expose is magic...

So any of you have anything useful to contribute, like how often this affects programs or what to do to avoid it?

New OS's (and the corresponding updates) are going to produce bugs that are un-avoidable unless you wait a few weeks to install after hearing the issues, etc. with the release, which is probably damn smart to do...

P.S. Oh yeah, "In before the

Of course. Hence the reason for posting the thread. Perhaps I should have titled it "Panther/Smeagol bug slows down performance in certain situations" or something like that, to make the other posters here happy.

I don't think this is Apple's bug. It is a hardware problem in Motorola's 7457.
