After activating filevault serious problem some days later. Had to do hard restart after problem install of vpc 5.0. After restart had no access to any files associated with my user. Sparseimage file appears to contain all of my user info, but can't access fil. Atttempted to correct problem as root user restoring user info using terminal. Used this command "mv /Users/.myshortname /Users/myshortname".
Got response "file .myshortname does not exist". It looks like my files are gone. I will keep the 15gb sparse image file archived with hopes for a future utility perhaps.

Have you tried the usual?

boot to single user mode (apple plus s keys during restart)
fsck -f
then reboot
repair permissions

This is what bugs me, Apple has refused to acknowledge there are problems with filevault and people continue to suffer.

I wonder if you were running 10.3.1 or not.

In any case, I've made a couple of posts on Apple's boards as well as opened a case with Apple. My posts were deleted and the problem was never acknowledged.

Why don't they just come out and say there's a problem. Geez. Okay, I'm still bitter from rebuilding my system oh 3 or 4 times.

It's been known almost since the day of 10.3's release that FileVault had some issues. Why are you using it?

never had any data loss issues with using it. but it pissed me off not having any settings stick when I changed them. finally just turned file vault off. maybe 10.3.2 will fix this.

I had data loss with this too. I had to create a new user account as my old one was trashed. This was quite a pain,
