DVD Player crashes upon launch

A while ago DVD Player just stopped working, and every time I load it up it just crashes, regardless of whether I have a DVD in the drive or not. VLC, on the other hand, seems to play DVDs OK, albeit with a few glitches here and there.

I am using a Rev.A 17" PowerBook, and Mac OS 10.2.8.

The SuperDrive itself seems OK, and I can burn DVDs and use CDs normally with no problem. Additionally, I don't recall ever changing the region coding of the drive more than once or twice, so the drive shouldn't have locked up.

It seems to be a software fault, and I've tried reinstalling DVD Player but with no success. Any suggestions as to how I can further diagnose or fix this problem?

Go into /Applications/Utilities and open up Console. Check the output when DVD Player crashes.

I get this:

## Component Manager: attempting to find symbols in a component alias of type (regR/carP/x!bt)
Nov 26 15:28:17 Simon-Youngs-Computer crashdump: Crash report written to: /Users/simonyoung/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/DVD Player.crash.log

So went and checked the crash log, and found this:

Command: DVD Player
PID: 513

Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000

How should I fix this, apart from a completely fresh install?

Have you fixed permissions? Does this affect all users on the machine?

I repair permissions regularly, and it's a single user machine (with auto login).

Does this happen on every movie you insert? I had problems with The Others on my Ti 867.

It doesn't crash when I insert a movie, it crashes when I try to run the app. It gets as far as displaying the controller, but then it just disappears and the dialogue box appears telling me that DVD Player has crashed. Wierd, huh? Something tells me its a corrupted or missing bit of software somewhere, as the drive works perfectly OK in all other respects. I'm hoping that when I finally upgrade to Panther and do a clean install that this problem will go away.

I had this problem a couple of times with Jaguar... had no idea what caused it. The only fix I could determine was a reinstall. An archive and install should do the trick, and (god forbid) a clean install shouldn't fail. If you're really daring, and don't want to bother with the reinstall process, download (and register) Pacifist, an app that lets you install individual components directly from your install disk.

Thanks, but I've already tried the Pacifist route. I managed to reinstall DVD Player, but I've got exactly the same prob.

How do I archive and re-install then? What gets archived? All of my apps and settings, as well as my user folder?
