I just set up my father's new 20" iMac which comes with 10.3 and I updated to 10.3.1, but when I attempt to open either an Self Mounting Image (.smi) file or Disk Image File (.dmg)file I get the following error message:
"Warning, The following disk images failed to mount. Reason, error -536870208"
I have never seen this error before and I tested the files on my PowerBook G4 DVI with 10.3.1 and they open fine. Any ideas on this?

Cool screen on that new 20". 2 options, You could repair permissions by using Disk Utility which may correct the issue or since it's a new computer and hopefully you haven't installed a bunch of apps yet then I would get out the included Panther CD or DVD install discs and do a complete erase and install. THe most effect way to erase is to use Disk Utility before attempting installation.
The reason that I recommend re-formatting the HD is because most likely it's not a Hardware issue, it's usually just bad software installed from the factory. It's happened on all three of my new Macs in the last 2 years. As a practice I just erase and install right out of the box now and this way you will have the option to include OS9 classic or leave it out.
Hope this helps.

It seems doing a complete format and reinstall gets things working again. It's sad that this problem can happen but I'm glad I hadn't started installing new software yet.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Never having used an iMac before I must say that's it's really nice. I was afraid the screen would be to heavy for the arm, but that's not the case at all. I think that 256MB of RAM Apple puts in the non-user accessible slot is a bit low so I'm having a 512MB module installed this weekend. Though the computer is very zippy with OS X 10.3.1 and the 256MB.
I thought my 20" Cinema Display seemed bigger than the iMacs so I did some measurements and this is what I can up with:
20" iMac:
Diagonal = 20"
Vertical = 10.5"
Horizontal = 17"
20" Cinema Display:
Diagonal = 20.25"
Vertical = 10.75"
Horizontal = 17.25"
So it seems the iMac is a TRUE 20" and the Cinema Display is just a bit more. No one can complain on that ;-)
