Could someone please explain to me why, every day, I get a message from Mail saying:

"The POP server rejected the password for user (my username). Please re-enter your password, or cancel."

It just started doing it the other day after I accidentally unplugged my cable modem for three seconds. It does it once a day, every day. Each day I re-enter the password and check the box to "Remember this password in my keychain", but the next day it pops back up again. I have rebooted my machine, I have opened and closed Mail. I have checked my preferences and everything seems in order.

Why do I keep getting this warning and how do I make it stop?

I don't get this as often as you do, but I get it from time to time. It's very annoying, especially as it seems to be something almost exclusive to Mail -- other email programs don't seem to exhibit this tendency, not nearly as much if at all!

good luck. Hopefully someone can weigh in with better information... I don't know what causes it.

It sounds like your keychain has been corrupted or the password entry has been duplicated. If you are running Panther, launch Keychain access and under the "Window" menu, select Keychain First Aid (or press command-option-A). Choose to verify and repair your keychain (you'll need your keychain password, which will be the same as your login password unless you changed it).

If you are on Jaguar, you need to download a separate app called Keychain First Aid from Apple (search at MacUpdate/Versiontracker/Apple for it).

If this happens only with your email client, then the problem may be with your ISP. I used to have Adelphia cable, and it was a semi-regular thing for their mail servers to get screwed and reject all passwords.

There is a ton of information about this on Apple's Mail & Address Book forum.

The leading cause of this is problems with your keychain. Go into your keychain (in your utilities folder in the applicaitons folder) and go to one of the menus (twards the end, I forgot which one) and choose Key Chain First Aid. This should fix the problem. If for any reason it doesn't, try removing your mail.app keychain entries and re-enter the passwords again...

Good Tip! This just helped me out actually since I found out I had some errors in my Keychains that are now fixed....thanks!

It's good to know that Apple has this option built-in, I still had the original stand-alone "Keychain First Aid" application from back in the day...
