I know on the PC you could do it through the Control Pannel: add remove.

but on the Mac i was told that you can just drag the program file from "Appplications" straight into the Trash. Does this sound right? I know on a pc this would cause problems, with lingering files asssociated to that deleted program.

So what to do, for example, Im delting Fire, should I just drag the Fire applcation file into the trash, and thats it?

Thanks much

That's generally the case on the Mac. Drag and drop install and removal. Even when an application is installed by an installer, that is usually true. Not sure about Fire, per se, but that is how I would do it and think no more about it.

There will also likely be a preference file in ~/Library/Preferences, and on rare occasions something in ~/Library/Application Support (for example, AIM installs something there). But these do not really do anything but sit there, and at least they are intuitive to find -- there's a preference file for each program, and the App Support list is usually very small.

Installing apps on a Mac doesn't write things to a central "registry" like in Windows, and installers don't (except maybe for Real) spew crap all over the file system. There are not random library files (.dll) all over the place. Apps are very self contained, so there is a lot less to worry about.

Thanks for the reply...that answers al my questions very well. Aside from the physical problems with my Mac, these forums make it a good experience.

So what is Apple going to do for you in regards to the white spots and dimmer right-side screen?

Ill have to show it to my local repair center on monday. Their office is a 1 min walk from my office, so I hope that they can order in a new screen, and have it installed at the repair center, rather than my being without my puter for a week. Does that sound realistic (the in house repair)?

In my experience they want to take your computer away from you to "determine the problem" no matter how obvious it is...So in all likelyhood they take your computer away and not give it back until they've received the part and replaced it.

My friends are really amazed that that's how you get rid of applications. "You just delete it!? That's so weird." "Yes, you just delete it."

Good luck with fixing up your Mac.

Yet again a Mac-zealot spews out crap. RealOne player is a single application that you unstuff and drag into the applications folder. There is no installer.

Up until the OS X version, his description is exactly right. So calm down.

Yea up until the OS X version which has been out for quite a while now...
I thought the OS 9 days were behind us.
Edit: and ever since the OS X version RealMedia has been very good to the mac community, another reason I find that attack on Real unjustified.

Dude, he said maybe. As in perhaps.

With your "Mac-zealot" comment I'm surprised that of all the other comments he made you singled out the one about RealOne player…
