Hi,

I am wondering whether to upgrade my old G4/350AGP (512mb RAM/32mb Radeon) to Panther from OS X 10.2.8 or not.

I don't know if it will make my system quicker (as Apple improve OS X with code refinements, etc) or slow it down (as Apple improve OS X with more and more features, etc).

I look forward to your replies,

Thanks in advance,

Matthew

It will be *way* faster with Panther. This has been discussed many times. Panther is much faster than Jaguar, particularly on old hardware.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it...

Looks like I need to upgrade then...

Thanks again,

I'd have to agree, my wife's original iBook is far more usable with Panther than Janguar. I couldn't believe the difference, it was like night and day.

I have the exact same setup as you (processor, RAM, vid card ... are you sure we're not the same person?), and I have to be honest, I've seen little to no difference in terms of speed. Certainly it isn't slower, but I don't find it anything like "having an all-new Mac."

I'm quite happy with Panther on my Powerbook G4 400Mhz with 320MB RAM.

IMHO, the harddrive speed (which is the bottle neck) will be the biggest determinent of your overall speed.

Yes it will be faster. It will feel much slower then OS9 did on the same system though.

"Hello, what have we here?

Did you "Upgrade", "Archive and Install" or perform a clean install?

I find that quite odd, as my G3 CRT iMac 450 DV+ is noticeably faster after a clean install of Panther compared to when it was running 10.2.6. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's like a new computer, but the responsiveness is much improved.

Well, if Panther can make my "aging" B&W run faster, then it should help your system somewhat also

FYI, I upgraded to a G4/550(o/c to 650)& Radeon7K last year and maxed ram to 1GB also, so I'm sure that helps too
