Open/Save Dialog's have been updated for the better in Panther but i still feel they are a far cry from being what they can and should be. I wonder why it is taking so many years to get this right. When Navigation services was introduced in Mac OS 8.5 i expected Apple to get them right way back then. Fast Forward 5 years and we still have a half baked Open/Save.

I think the Open/Save dialogs should be exactly the same as a regular Finder window with all its View settings like Font Size, Show or Not Show Preview. The dialog should also provide the same tool bar customization as a regular Finder window so users can add their tools like the filtered Search, the New Folder, Delete Folder, Info..show icon only, text only or icon and text.

The preview column is important. In some sound apps it would be handy to be able to preview and play some audio files before electing to open them or save them (since u want them to be saved to the correct folder a quick preview enables u to listen to some other files to decide if its the correct folder.

The current Open/Save dialogs are in Column View or List view...but List view still doesn't let the user decide on Font size or the columns they wish to have displayed.

If Apple need to differentiate between regular Finder windows and Open/Save dialogs all they need to do is make sure Finder Windows remain Brushed Metal while Open/Save Dialogs remain white or some other color different to a Finder window. But it really shouldn't matter if the Open/Save Dialogs look EXACTLY like and function like regular Finder windows.

Anywayz i hope Apple addresses this WAY before the next big update.

It shouldn't be too hard to implement.

i agree.

used to love default folder under 9. pity it's not a patch on it's former self these days.

as well as the ones you mentioned i'd like to see the following gems from the system9 version of default folder implemented:

1. ability to drag files to the bin/trash from within an open/save dialogue

2. ability to rename a previously saved file in an open/save dialogue. [handy when you realise you've mistakenly saved the last file with the name of the current file you're working on].

sometimes the functional inconsistencies in the finder really irritate me!
