My mac was asleep for the day as I drove back home. I put it back in its place and turned it on to find everything white replaced with turquoise. Somehow the mac thinks that the default bg color is turquoise.

Any ideas on how to move forward? Is this hardware or software?

Also the monitor mirroring and spanning works perfectly (colors correct on external monitor).

That's very strange. It doesn't look like a hardware problem, since some things still show their proper colors. But it doesn't look like a software problem either, because you say spanning seems to work fine. Have you tried mirroring?

i dunno if this may help - but have u tried to repair the colour profiles (using /utilities/coloursync utility)?
i think this is like repair permissions but for colour profiles... i found 140 errors or something at one stage.

That's actually a good idea. Try recalibrating your monitor; something may be strange there. This would account for other monitors working fine.

Just restart and run fsck. This seeems to clear up some intermittant issues at times.

Hold down apple-s, when the screen comes up type in fsck -yf and hit the return button, After it is done re run it if there is something it fixed. Finally type in reboot and hit return to restart the computer.
