Pretty new to OSX so please bare with me. Mac OSX being bsd based, I assumed OSX to create various partitions on a fresh install. However seeing that the panther install didn't give me an option of creating partitions (not even swap size), I was wondering how i could create them. Personally I would like to make a huge /home (user) partition to save all my docs, music and movies when i format my drive. However, I would guess this to mess a fresh install of OSX considering it would makes its own /user oblivious to mine. I would also like to create a /usr and /usr/local but seeing as i dont really see anyprograms going in there i guess its not that useful.

Unless you are planning on running with different OS versions on different partitions I wouldn't partition your disk. OS X makes assumptions that you won't be doing this and you may have problems if you do.

You can use the Disk Utility app to partition drives _before_ you install the OS (or data) on that drive.

BTW the pros and cons of disk partitioning have been discussed many times in this forum. Just search on 'partition'.
