System: PowerMac g4 533
I am running Jaguar 10.2.2 and also 9.x on (partitioned drive).
Sometimes my MAC freezes and get this chirping sound from within the machine. I usually just reboot and sometimes its fine, sometimes I have to let it sit for a few, then reboot. But it always worked again until last night.
Now nothing works. I restart and I get a gray screen with a folder icon in the middle flashing a question mark and that macintosh face icon. I have tried rebooting, hitting the magic button within the machine, and I let it sit all night. I booted with the Jaguar installation disk and tried fixing any problems with the Disk Repair thingy. Thats all I can think to do.
I would like not to reinstall jaguar if possible.
Anybody know whats up? I appreciate any help!

The folder icon means that no valid system can be found. This is most likely due to hard drive corruption or failure, hence the clicking sound. What did Disk Utility (on the Jaguar boot CD) say?
I'd pick up a retail disk utility such as DiskWarrior to repair any corruption. The Disk Utility Apple provides isn't much good for serious problems.
And, for future reference, it's Mac, not MAC.

Disk Utility didn't report anything. I repaired all of the permissions too and that didn't do anything. If I pick up this DiscWarrior, can I use it even though I can't boot up? Will it automatically run if tI put the CD in? Thanks, too.
edit: wait, website answers that question.

Hmm, was Disk Utility able to see your drive and the files on it?
If so, the problem is likely not a hardware problem, and thus, probably fixable by DiskWarrior.

I have the same question as CharlesS: does Disk Utility see your drive? You say Disk Utility doesn't report anything, but that's not very descriptive.
If this is disk corruption (which is quite likely considering you repeatedly hard rebooted the machine), DiskWarrior will fix your problem.
If this is a hardware failure, then hopefully you picked up AppleCare. Otherwise, you'll have to pick up a new hard drive.
