My AGP G4 is via DSL connected to the net, I have a FireWire cable, now both Computers are connected.

How can I use that connection easily, see my HDs on each comp's desktop andsoforth without hassle.

I have NO CLUE what dhcp IP whatever I have to set etc. I failed. Step-by-step help here?

On both your iBook and G4 (provided they are running Panther),
1) Open System Prefs -> Go to Network pref pane.
2) Open the Show menu and select Network Port Configurations.
3) Click New...
4) Call it "Firewire" and select Built-in Firewire from the Port menu.

On your Powermac G4:
1) Go to System Preferences -> click on Sharing
2) Click on the Internet tab, check the box that says "Firewire"
3) Press the Start button.

On your iBook,
1)System Prefernces -> Network
2)In the Network Status if there is a green circle next to the Firewire, then you're all set.

If not, check to see if your wire is not faulty by testing it with a camera or other device. Also, if your internet isn't working, you might have to put in the proxy addresses of your ISP if there are any.

Enable
Have fun!

Because USB isn't peer-to-peer. Notice how USB cables have one plug on the computer end, and a different plug on the peripheral end? It wasn't designed for two computer-like devices to talk to each other, whereas Firewire is. Or that's my dim understanding of it, anyway.

I doubt it's just because of that. XP has this.
Detto Technologies' Move-2-Mac has a cable that provides this funtionality, via USB.

Because again, you need special equipment to do peer-to-peer USB, and all Macs come with built-in ethernet. Why bother with USB?

in my case at least, because more than once I have needed to use my Cable modem via USB.

Besides, what happened to the Firewire-over-IP protocol? It was available for some days but disappeared..
TGM works fine though only if you can shutdown one of the computers

What he is trying to do IS IP over Firewire. And it's built in in Panther.

That requires special drivers from the modem maker, and is not the same thing as is being discussed here.

right ... I must be wrong then ...
I though it was the same since XP recognizes the USB port as a network capable device by itself ... but I guess that must be after drivers are installed.
