I am a Windows network admin at work.
I have my AlBook here and it connects to out network in the sense that it grabs an IP address from the DHCP server and then I can surf the web and get e-mail from outside servers.

When I had a Windows laptop, I did the same thing (it plugged in, grabbed a DHCP IP address, but never logged in to our network), but the name of the laptop would show up on the network - this was useful in tracking bandwidth usage as well as where our IP addresses are going inside our firewall.

With the Mac, I don't see a way for it to send a name to the Windows network. I don't need it to show up in Network Neighborhood, and I don't need it to be able to login to the servers and access files.

I just want to be able to do a "net view" and see the laptop name show up in the list of machines connected to the network.

Anyone here versed in this sort of thing?

Have you set up the AluBook with a "DHCP Client ID" in Network Prefs?

I think you have to turn on 'Windows Sharing' in the 'Sharing' area of System Preferences.

I filled in the DCHP id as "banana" just to assure that it wouldn't match anything on our network. I did this some time back - it never showed up on our network.

I have since now filled out the Windows sharing information and changed the names in there so that it will stand out on the network - I don't actually want to share anything, I just want to be able to easily track bandwidth usage and do a local nslookup on the IP and resolve it to the computer name.

It hasn't shown up yet in the nslookup table, but I will give it some time to see if that is in fact all that was missing.

thank.
