i installed the developer software on my mac and realized i did not need it, now im stuck with the damn thing on my hard drive taking up valuable space. when i go to delete it it says that i can not because "this item is owned by the root" is there any way to rid myself of it short of reinstalling jaguar?

Doing it manually is not a good way.
you can always enable root access and delete it.

select to folder 'developer' option-click (or right click) and select 'get info'. Expand 'Ownership & permissions' click the lock icon. change the owner to your username. click 'apply to enclosed items' close the get info window and delete the developers folder.*
*I haven't actually done this. but i don't see why it won't work.

I believe along with the installer package, there's a "Remove Developer Tools" package as well.

under /developer/tools there is a script called uninstall-devtools.pl. Run that and it will wipe the dev tools out.

This is indeed a good idea since the developer tools installer installs all kinds of headers and documentation inside the frameworks in /System. Those make up a considerable fraction of the disk space taken up by the Developer Tools.

Open up the Terminal (/Applications/Terminal (Jaguar and earlier) or /Applications/Utilities/Terminal (Panther)).
Type sudo /Developer/Tools/uninstall-devtools.pl
When prompted, enter your password. The script should then start removing the developer tools, it may take a while as there are a lot of files to remove.
