Is this a retail copy of jaguar, or an upgrade CD? What machine are you trying to install on?

an upgrade cd. i'm trying to do it on a g4 dual proc machine.
i got a clean install done with the original mac os x discs that came with my computer. but here's the thing.
os 9 is gone from my computer now. i don't have a problem with this. i never used os 9. but my question is, do i need os 9 for my machine to run properly?
also when i try to install panther now it doesn't let me install. instead it acts like it's going to install with a restart, but then the computer just loads up as usual.
once i do this however, on load up before the grey screen with the apple logo, there is a grey screen with a os 9 folder icon that blinks a ? and the finder icon.
what does that mean?
thanks for the help.

It means it cannot find a start up folder.
To start up from the CD either keep the C key on your keyboard pressed while restarting (doesn't work for wireless keyboard from Logitech though) or in your System Preferences choose for Start Up Disk and choose the CD, then restart.
Hope this helps!

No, you do not need OS 9 for your computer to run properly. Although there are programs that may require it. If you do not need it or use it, then OS 9 is not required.

as far as i know, panther upgrade cd's are not bootable - i bought panther when it came out, cd = bootable. however, when i bought my pb 12" a few weeks ago, it came with 10.2 and the panther upgrade set and that disc will not boot any of my machines.
you're probably gonna have to install 10.2 from the original cd and then archive + install/upgrade to panther.
cheers,
eff
