On an old pismo conserving CPU cycles while running any version of X is important- although in Panther the computer feels faster. Question is when I first installed panther I opted not to install the unix component to it- thinking that it would only add bloat and thus slow my system down, BUT now programs like cocktail dont work. Can I install the unix thing over panther without re-installing the OS? and will this addition slow my rig down with stuff that will be running in the back round?

You can just run the BSD.PKG on the Mac OS X installer disk to install the bsd components after installing OS X. It shouldn't slow down the system too much. I'd just install it.

All it does is install a bunch of tiny programs that can be used by other applications.

It will take a little room on your hard drive, but those programs won't be actually running (using up memory and CPU), unless you run an application that uses them.

It will absolutely not cause any slowdown at all.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Odd side note question…

Under Jag, some UNIX functionality required the Dev Tools to be installed.

To save on limited disk space, under Panther, I have not installed XTools. I don't code, so I'm wondering if I'll have problems next time I need to do a make or Fink install etc.

I'm not *NIX knowledgeable so I don't know if the situation has changed since Jag.

Anyone know for sure?

The Developer Tools include gcc and all the rest of the command-line compiler tools, as well as all the headers, and without those, yeah, fink isn't going to work. I doubt it would work without the BSD subsystem either.

<shameless plug> If you want, you could use Pacifist (click the link in my signature to download it) and open the Developer Tools package with it. Then, you can just install the stuff that goes in /usr, /etc, /var, /System, etc. and leave out the whole /Developer folder, thus getting the BSD apps and the headers but not XCode and the other apps you don't want. </shameless plug>

You will probably want to have the entire BSD subsystem, though.
