Thank GOD Apple included this in the OS (the client that is) Now I can admin 200 computers from one station with little or no fuss. I have had people call me after I ask them if I can take over their computer and fix something (while talking to them over the phone). Not only does it let me take over the computer, but it lets me give them a quick "how to" over the phone without having to take a trip over to the actual campus. Considering some of these clowns are 5+ miles away...

When it takes 5 mins to do something that traditionally would have taken a day or so to get to, people beg for more help... this is the only downside. They also don't feel comfortable after I take over their computers... (even though I tell them to shut it off, and I can't access it anymore).

The client has been included on every installer CD since MacOS 9, but has been a non-default install up until 10.3.

Having the ra client built into panther has been a great blessing for me as an admin... I've been using remote desktop since Jag (before the clients were built in and we had to install) and it saves me countless hours... No need to run all over the place to fix something simple...

Would be nice if the admin tool were also built into panther so I could administer any computer from any computer, but with airport & my powerbook this is not such a big deal.

This said, remote access is definitely a carbon port and occasionally the edges are rough and it would be nicer if you could drag files/folders directly from your desktop to the client desktop instead of going through the clunky menu settings...

The RD interface is drag and drop. Just select the client(s) you wish to target, and drag your files/folders to the RD list window. You get a choice to copy to the same relative path, copy to a specified place, or copy and open.

Still, for narrowband 1 to 1 remote desktop, vnc wins hands down. Use OSXVNC as a server, and Chicken of the VNC as client.
