Okay, you know how in the finder, you can view QT files without ever opening QT? It uses Preview or something, I don't remember but the file just plays in the finder. It's the same with .mp3s and iTunes.

Can you do this with .wmvs or other video types?

It doesn't use Preview, it uses QuickTime, so the Finder can display any file that QuickTime can display, which excludes Windows Media.

Oh that's dumb.

So the Finder cannot add like WMP support or anything like that?

Well, if Microsoft or Real released a plug-in for Quicktime, then it could... but they haven't and there is no hope that they ever will. The only other way would be if Apple or someone else reverse engineered the MS/Real codecs which is likely extremely difficult.

Not to mention a legal minefield... Patents this. patents that.

It's not the only thinkable way. The Finder could possibly use the Real/WMP internet plug-ins to preview this content. Don't know how feasible that would be, but feedback if you need this functionality.
