Here's the biggest complaint I'm having with my Power Mac lately (Quicksilver 733 G4). IT WON'T STAY ASLEEP! It's the most annoying thing on earth...anything at all seems to wake it! I always thought you could set it only to wake when a key was pressed or something, but looking in the System Prefs I can't see it. Instead, I'll put it to sleep, and it'll wake up at random times, for no apparent reason...if I happen to walk by, bump the desk, or close a door! I'd love to just put it to sleep when I go to bed, but it keeps waking up and then waking ME up in the middle of the night.

I can't take this hyper-sensitivity any longer! Arrrrrgh!

That's really weird...I would say it the mouse shake movement...maybe it's your mouse that's super-sensitive. But walking by? Closing doors? Maybe your computer is haunted.

Yes, it is! It's a Karna Razor Boomslang gaming mouse, one of the most sensitive mice on the market, now that I think about it. That's ridiculous! I love my mouse, and I love having a sensitive mouse. There's no other way to get around this??

Did MacOS 9 have Sleep so you woke it up by pressing a key? I seem to remember that moving the mouse did nothing.

Flipping it on its back or unplugging would be so annoying.

You probably need to reset the PMU (power management unit). I would send you a link to a knowledgebase document, but you don't have access to the same stuff I do. So, here goes. Please actually READ this before you do it:

- Unplug your computer from the AC power.
- Open the door
- touch the metal frame to discharge any static electricity
- there is a button on your logic board. It may be labled "PMU reset" and it should (but may not) be near the backup battery
- push the button once and only once, for less than a second.
- wait 15 seconds and plug the AC power back in to your machine.
- Boot the machine.
- Your date&time settings will be gone.
- your PRAM will be reset.
- if you had a RAM disk, it will now be gone. (that's why you should have read this first).

If you aren't comfortable doing this procedure, or you can't find the button, take your machine to your local Apple Authorized service center and kindly ask them to explain a PMU reset procedure to you.

Also, note that a corrupt PMU will kill your backup battery within two to three days. You may need a new backup battery. If you have a volt meter, it should read 3.5 - 3.7 volts. Anything below 3.5 is considered dead enough to replace.

BTW, the PMU controls everything power related, which includes sleep, shutdown, restart, power up, spinning down the hard drives, etc... So, if your machine restarts instead of shutting down, it's probably the PMU. If you press the power button and the button lights up, but nothing happens, it's worth a shot to try the PMU (usually, that's not the PMU, but it works sometimes).

Happened to me this summer while I was on vacation and accidently left the machine plugged directly into the wall. Had an electrical storm while I was gone, and thought I'd fried something for sure. Resetting the PMU worked, though.....
