I need to use a Windows software on my iBook so I am getting a license for Windows 98SE.

When I install both VirtualPC and Win98SE, would I need to get the latest patch and updates for the Windows OS? Would I also need an antivirus program and a firewall program? I am going online with the new software.

I feel secure on Mac but not on Windows.

You will need to update to the latest patches via Windows update online. You mentioned that you have an iBook but you didn't mention which one? It's important to know that VPC does require a really fast Mac to perform at it's best. Unless you have one of the G4 based models (preferably 1 Ghz) then expect to see slow performance even with all the updates. As far as security, even if you don't install the patches anything that happens to Windows 98 such as the worm virus will not affect your Mac because it's inside of the VPC environment.

Thank goodness.
It is an 800mhz G4. The software is not graphic intensive or ram hungry so I shouldn't worry about that.

You made the qualifier for VPC. It should run decently especially for the type of apps you are going to run on it. For best performance allocate less than half of the ram in your Mac to VPC. You can adjust this in VPC settings. Don't allocate the max that VPC will accept because it will over-reserve the necessary memory and begin to use virtual memory to run both the Mac and VPC and things will get sluggish. If you need VPC 6 then get it right now but if you can wait I read today that Microsoft will announce the new VPC at Macworld in January. Most likely it will be a faster version and be G5 compatible in case you get a G5 in the near future.
Cheers.
