Are there any other apps that make use of the G5's surround sound audio optical out ? Like perhaps being able to play mp3's with surround reverb or perhaps surround sound games ?

Not on my G5 it doesn't, every time I try and get it to play a dvd it crashes with audio buffer error, and then I have no sound at all from my computer and I have to restart...

This isn't really how it works. Whatever you pass over the optical port needs to be fed into an external decoder/amp. It's basically just a transport.

Apple's DVD player (in Panther) will pass out DD and DTS over the optical port, which would be connected to a A/V Receiver (decoder).

The game would have to be able to encode a DD stream (for example) in real time to be decoded by the A/V Receiver.

But the playstation 2 and xbox output dolby digital during games..... I'm not sure what format pc's use, but you can hook them up to dolby digital amps as well....I don't see why mac's can't do it.... I guess it's a money thing...

I'm hoping in the future that quicktime will have support for 5.1, like windows media does now on pc...

I can't find any such feature in the final release of Panther....the AAC export only lets me choose stereo...

True, but you still need to feed the Xbox or PS2 through a decoder that knows what do to with the digital signal.
Plug the G5 into a Digital Dolby or DTS receiver, hook up your speakers and take games to a new level.
Ghost Recon, Neverwinter Nights and Warcraft 3 never sounded better.

The sound is crisper, but it's still not surround.

The XBox does, I think the PS2 can only do DTS...

That's right, the Xbox has the ability to encode Dolby Digital streams in hardware.

The PS2 supports DTS games, but this is done in software.

huh?

If the games says Dolby 5.1, my Onkyo Receiver says Dolby 5.1, the computer uses Fiberoptic digital, how is that not surround?

EDIT: Forgot to add I also have Polk Audio 5.1 speakers.

The defaul output of the G5 is just a regular stereo signal (PCM digital signal). Unless the application you're using explicitely supports encoding into AC3, DD, DTS or some other surround format, you're just hearing the regular stereo signal.

Now, your receiver may be doing some tricks to create a pseudo-surround effect, but that's not "real" surround sound.

Currently, no games on the Mac will give you surround sound. As others have said, they would have to encode to one of the multi-channel formats in real time. Apple's DVD Player will pass the AC3 signal out the digital connection, as that signal is already pre-encoded into surround. VLC is supposed to be able to do the same thing.

Are you sure no games do this? Medal of Honor has a sound option for Surround, but I couldn't really tell if it was working or just the speakers system splitting up a stereo signal. Also, I thought UT2k3 was Dolby Digital 5.1 as well.

'Surround' does not necessarily mean Dolby Digital, etc.

This requires hardware, see:
