I have a weird problem with OS X 10.2. I switched my color depth from millions to thousands, and my monitor went blank. The computer still responded to keyboard and mouse input, but my monitor was just blank.

After rebooting, everything seemed to be okay. But as soon as the dock was shown, the screen went blank again. Keyboard and mouse still work (I can shutdown the system), but I just can't see anything.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

looks like your monitor has trouble with your config.
try deleting the window server prefs file
go into single user mode, or boot using a Mac OS 9 CCD and delete the file com.apple.windowserver.plist located in /Library/Preferences/

Here is what Apple recommends you do:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106564

Basically holding down the shift key when you start up should get you out of this.

Hope this helps!

I just dealt with this the other day. You can do as one poster has described and remove the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist file, but you may also need to change into your home library preferences at ~/youruseraccount/Library/Preferences/

and then change into the ByHost directory...
from this point you will want to look for something like this: com.apple.windowserver.0003936980c2.plist

remove that file (the numbers in your account may vary, and there may be more than one windowserver pref file like this).

If you need more specific directions:

restart
hold command-s when you hear the chime
a black screen with white letters will come up
type the following:

mount -uw /
rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
rm ~/yourusername/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.*.plist
halt now

Please replace yourusername with your short user name in the above example. Your computer will shut down. Reboot and cross your fingers.

You're welcome, donations accepted.

Deleting the file in my home directory did the trick, thanks!
