Can Apple use crash reports from 3rd party applications? can they send them to the developers? should i be sending MPlayer etc crash logs to Apple or not? Apple's Crashsubmitter continues to ask me to. Anyone have any insight into the feature? thanks
further explination if you don't understand or are angry-
When apps crash, Apple's bug reporter crash log sender do-hicky pops up (crashreporter/crashsubmitter/whatever). now, when a 3rd party application crashes, it opens still and asks to report to Apple. Apple wouldn't have had difficulty in making this only for Apple applications, but they didn't. It's probably going to be a service for 3rd party developers, but it's currently sending these things to Apple (or it says it is). a million of reports for crappyhack.app could flood them, or they could be simply filtering out nonapple applications, or they could be forwarding them to crappyprogrammers inc.
did a couple searches, no luck, sorry if this has been asked before.

I'm pretty sure they're sending all reports to Apple for all crashes (and not, for example, sending reports to 3rd party developers).
I actually hate this feature. When I'm doing development work and trying to figure out a bug that's crashing my program, I have to go throught that stupid dialog every time.
I got rid of the dang thing. It's at /System/Library/CoreServices/CrashReporter.app. I just moved it, but it would probably be better to put in an app that does nothing since every crash causes a ~1 sec hang while CrashReporter is searched for.

heh, so i guess i should stop sending in these crash logs including the developer's email address and a "please get this working with other apps!" message ;-)
still, i'm surprised apple couldn't just tell it to identify apple applications and report only for them....i mean, doing something like that is as easy as scanning application.app/contents/info.plist for a "copyright apple computer". if it were a huge problem (a deluge of reports), i bet they'd have fixed it in 10.3.1, but i guess we'll see what happens in this next "larger than normal" update...

Well, Apple has you send the crash reports to them because in theory, it can allow them to spot errors in their software. If lots of apps are crashing in a Quicktime routine, there's a chance that routine either has a bug or is poorly documented.
What they should do is allow the developer to programatically set the destination for any crash reports. That way, the crash report could go to Apple and the developer too.
