I remember a few incarnations ago, when a .RTDF file was saved by textedit it was an actual file that could be double-clicked in the finder. Now, they are folders that can be opened only by dragging the folder to TextEdit's application icon. What's the deal? Is there a way to change this?

Show up as a file on my machine.
Maybe your LaunchServices cache has become corrupted. Have you tried deleting it?

Maybe this is a stupid question... but is the file actually named something.RTDF?
Because the file extension is supposed to be .RTFD and swapping the 'f' and 'd' makes it have the symptoms you're describing.

RTFD "files" have always (ie since 10.0 and earlier) been stored as packages (ie. a folder) like applications.

Not a stupid question but precisely the question I would ask.
An "RTF" is a "Rich Text Format" document, "RTFD" files being RTFs packaged with embedded images and such... who knows what the heck an "RTDF" is. :-D

So, did it solve the problem? And if so, how did your extension end up becoming .rtdf anyway?
Also, what does the D stand for? Is it Rich Text Format Directory? I doubt it's "document"

I don't know if you meant to quote and reply to my post... but I doubt that the "D" stands for "document" as well.
Code:
"Yes. _There is a difference between RTF and RTFD. _RTF is a single file, RTFD is a package containing an RTF file (as TXT.rtf) plus attachments."

it was a typo, I meant to say ".rtfd". Honestly, how would I save a file from Textedit as ".rtdf"? I just deleted the launchservices files from my cache, I'll restart later and let you know if that helps anything.

Maybe it stands for "read this F-ing document!"
That's what I think when I see it, anyway. It's just a little to close to RTFM...

well, it was a typo that you made twice in the post - so it was hard to tell if it was just a typo, or intentional. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but sometimes the answer really is something that simple.
for refrence, you can set your preferences to allow you to change the file extension when you save the file. Which I thought maybe what happened.
Try the LaunchServices cache.
