Every time FileVault proposes to get rid of unused space, I fear the worst for my home account.
Encrypting at the driver level would be an interesting alternative. I still think this is what Apple should have done in the first place, as it entails no disk image vulnerable to crashes, and also works really transparently (certain apps show the real way FileVault works by showing its alias in the users folder, and the disk at the root -- Graphic Converter for one).
However, I don't have two Macs to try out SubrosaSoft's
CypherDisk. Does anyone have any experience with it?
Also, this leads me to think that it does not work on the driver level
To OS X, the data appears random and unusable until you type in your password. Because all data access to the disk is then passed through CipherDisk which decrypts the data on reads/writes to disks.
Having all one's disk I/O routed through some software cannot be very good for performance and stability, or does it not have any effect?
(As to the apps UI, I think those Kiwis have seen a bit too much Lord of the Rings
