Audio Balance Slider Missing

I've had my SoundSticks connected to the same mac for two years now, so this must be a 10.3 problem. Anyway, one day my sound balance had shifted almost all the way to the left. I've heard of this happening so I went to the System Preferences to fix the balance using the slider. The slider wasn't there though. It said "The selected output device has no output controls." I tried trashing any preference that looked related to sound and nothing helped. I ended up switching the SoundSticks to the other USB port in the back of the computer and the sound problem was fixed. The weird part is that now the balance slider returned to System Preferences! I thought the problem was gone, but it's happened again. ALL sound is coming out of the left SoundStick and nothing is coming out of the right one. The balance slider has disappeared again and this time switching USB ports is not helping.
BTW, the balance slider always shows up when I switch the output device to the built-in system sound.
My question: Does anyone know which preference file controls the sound balance?

I have the exact same problem - I can hear the sound coming out of (mostly) one speaker only, but in System Preferences there's no balance control. It appears if I disconnect and reconnect the SoundSticks to the same USB port (or others, I guess), and it's set almost all the way to the left.
Help would be much appreciated!

Rebooted, unplugged them, even tried switching them. Nothing is bringing my balance slider back and the sound isn't getting any better. Any other ideas?

Try using the Audio MIDI Setup app in the Utilities folder for a temporary fix maybe.

Nothing would fix my messed up audio settings with the soundsticks and iSub.
Change settings
Changed user
Deleted all preferences
Restarted
Restarted
Restarted
Installed 10.3
Updated to 10.3.2
Arrrghhhh
then this thread...Oh just change the settings in the Audio Midi Setup.
Well it worked. For some reason it was changed to mono.
Couple of things. Audio MIDI Setup is extremely powerful. It is also completely hidden and undocumented unless you know where to look. I can't believe how much time I wasted trying to get my soundstick audio back.
Shouldn't Audio MIDI Setup be part of the System Preferences or at least documented as exsisting and an option for controlling sound output? From playing with the Audio MIDI Setup utility it seems that the Sound System Preference is actually a simplified control of the Audio MIDI Setup.
Is there more about this utility that we need to know? Please tell.
Ciao, atFault
