I've just discovered the joys of iCalViewer, but I was wondering if it would be possible to run the app without having it turn up in the dock? any ideas?

In the app's Info.plist add an LSUIElement with value 1.

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

You can't remove a program from the dock whilst the program is running, and if like me you run several small helper apps they can clutter up your dock (esp. on a 12" screen).

so dockless just makes them invisible while they are running?

If you are using an app which uses the LSUIElements=1 technique under Panther (maybe this includes Dockless--I've never tried it), you might be able to get it to work like this:
Quit the app in question (the one you want to be gone from the Dock). Make sure that the LSUIElement bit is one. Now move it from its current directory to another one, maybe the Desktop. Then move it back where you want to keep it. Launch it.
The preference to hide it in the Dock should now be respected.
This technique definitely works with LaunchBar (it was their recommendation) and FocusLayer; I assume any other app which uses the LSUIElements tag will work as well. Apparently it has something to do with the way the Panther Finder uses caching.
